The Riverview Education Foundation (REF) is proud to announce the award of a $30,000 District Initiative grant to support 5th-grade students at Cherry Valley, Stillwater, and Carnation Elementary Schools.

Outdoor education is a beloved and formative experience for Riverview students—one that builds teamwork, confidence, and a lasting connection to nature. When state funding for outdoor education was reduced, this long-standing 5th-grade tradition was at risk.  REF acted quickly to help bridge the gap and ease the fundraising burden for schools and families.

With this grant, each 5th grader will receive $130 toward the cost of attending  outdoor camp, helping ensure that all students have the opportunity to  participate in this memorable tradition during the 2025–2026 school year.

“Research shows the benefits to outdoor education supports the whole child-academically, socially, and emotionally,” says Ashley Wood, 5th grade teacher at Stillwater Elementary. “We consider outdoor education a success when all students engage in lessons, try new activities, and collaborate with others.”

Each year, REF partners with the Riverview School District to identify a District Initiative that benefits a broad range of students across all schools. These initiatives allow REF to make a meaningful, district-wide impact by funding programs and experiences that strengthen education and enrich student life. This year’s focus on outdoor education underscores REF’s commitment to supporting experiential learning and helping students thrive—both inside and outside the classroom.
